With parallelism being en vogue in the CPU world these days, there is now more of a push towards multithreaded game design. If your engine does networking, AI or physics you probably benefit from multithreaded code already, if only to keep things uncomplicated. Gamasutra is running an article on why multithreading is a good idea and gives some ideas as to organizing your game loop.
