Gamasutra is running quite a hefty a piece on "historical" First Person Shooters, including a top five list of titles that defined the genre. Doom doesn't make the list, but settles for honourable mention instead, which perhaps reflects the age group of the site more than anything else. In my day a frag fest meant dodging plasma strife on 386es over RS-232, and that's the way we liked it!
