Microsoft has recently announced a product called for amateur game development called XNA Game Studio Express. From what I've read it sounds like a copy of Visual C# 2005 Express bundled with a few content creation tools. The most interesting thing is that Managed DirectX for .NET 2.0 is still in beta (it was still missing features the last time I attempted to use it), so I guess the a new version of MDX is coming out with this new product. I'll get some more info when the beta of XNA Game Studio Express is released.
