A render from Indigo (indigorenderer.com), showing the new(ish) metal reflection model.

This scene has 2 planes, two area lights, and 3 meshes, each with ~= 500000 tris.

Thanks to Jotero for the Ajax model.

The metal reflection model uses freely available tabulated complex index of refraction data.

The tabulated data is interpolated to form continuous spectral data, and then fed into the Fresnel reflectance equations when needed.

The metals shown are, from left to right: (pure) silver, copper, and gold.

For this render I used the newish bidirectional MLT mode of Indigo.

Render time was about 2 hours with 1 thread on 1 pc.

That looks awsome.

Though it looks more like a base metal with metallic spraypaint on it. Perhaps that's just an artefact of rendering.

Hmm.. well that's one take on it DSA :)

One reason why these metal models may looks a little unnatural is that it's rare to see in the real world, for example, a large, untarnished, chunk of pure copper or 24 carat gold. Usually you see alloys, with tarnishes, scratches, etc..

The picture looks like it has some noise... that could make it look like there's small bumps on the surface.
