I could use some help with the following problem:

Prove that (1+i) is a maximal ideal of Z[i] (the ring of gaussian integers).

Wtf is a gaussian integer?

A complex number a+bi where a and b are integers.

But 1 isn\'t prime, though...

Actually, I did not solve this one yet so the reply is still very useful. :)

I didn\'t know what a principal ring was yet, but I\'m reading up on these terms now and I\'m beginning to understand the proof. Thanks.
